Anima Gate of Memories started as a kickstarter project a few years ago. I finally got to play the game that me and many others have been waiting for. May I say the wait was totally worth it? This game is created by three talented people. I have to admit I really do not know much about the Anima Universe, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying this wonderful game!

Story

The story takes place in the world of Gaia. A land filled with magitech, magic, monsters and religious nutters trying to save humanity.
We follow the adventure of the bearer of calamities a girl that has no name since it was eaten by an unwilling pact. And the powerful Entity Ergo. A monster with a very pleasant attitude who is sealed into a book because he was a real naughty boy. He was the one who ate the bearers name but in return she can control his powers to kick the evil in the arse.

Now those two have a special relationship Ergo loves to tease the bearer pissing her off when he can. She won’t admit it she acts as if she really doesn’t like him but not all things are as they seem. In this game those two end up in a strange tower Arcana. Here they get to learn that the messengers are reuniting to bring forth the end of the world. Who are these messengers? Why is Arcana really there? You will have to find out.

The story in this game is simply hands down amazing. You will meet many interesting characters you will either love them or hate them. Each character will simply grow on you thanks to the rich lore this game has to offer. The depth in the story is simply mind blowing.

Gameplay

The gameplay is easy to pick up but hard to master. This game plays in a traditional hack and slash, rpg, beat your foes up and get a high combo kind of way. The interface is clean, It’s very easy to navigate. My only complaint there it gets confusing as the controls show how it works with a controller and not with a keyboard.

In this game you will kill a lot of enemies, when I say a lot I mean omg I am surrounded blood mode engaged! There are some unforgiving bosses and trust me they do hurt, but the boss battles are super fun. The combat is fast paced and intense, it is very important to master dodging if not you will seriously get your arse kicked.

You can easily switch between the bearer and Ergo anytime. They both offer different styles of combat. The bearer is more graceful and elegant and she is quicker to dodge and recovers quicker from a jump. While Ergo is super aggressive, depending where you put your points he is in my opinion far more close combat oriented and hits much faster. Alas he is slower to dodge and needs more time to recover from a jump. Each character has their own skill tree. The skill tree is pretty straight forward. You level up gain points use points to unlock more skills.
The Skill Tree
If you get tired from all the bloodshed then you are in luck! This game has some fascinating puzzles. You have to stop and think or use the lore you have gathered to figure out how to solve it. The puzzles in this game are great fun.

It is also possible to upgrade your character by finding weapons and trinkets throughout the world. They appear in various flame colours. Just run towards the flame and the item is yours. However some of them are cleverly hidden make sure to keep your eyes open.

This game has collectibles! Throughout the journey through Arcana you must gather memory fragments you will need them to face the nasty ol’ bosses!

Platforming in this game can be a bit of a headache since it’s hard to position your character thanks to the controls and the camera. But once you get used to it, the headaches will go away. However the camera loves to misbehave from time to time.

There is a lot of replayability in this game. The game features 5 different endings and a new game + mode. I won’t spoil the fun, some of the endings do offer a great laugh.

Graphics

I have to say for a team with only 3 people this game looks gorgeous. They have put so much attention on detail. I love the architecture in this game. The places look incredible, the enemies look original the characters look simply great. the world’s vary which is a good thing. You travel to an evil mansion to a beautiful mystical wonderland, to an amazing cathedral to some incredible temples. I won’t spoil the fun.
Every character is well designed I simply love the artwork of each individual character.

My only problem with the graphics is that it really drains your system. I hope they will make an optimisation patch to fix the odd lags the game sometimes have.

Sound

Anima Gate of Memories has some amazing soundtrack that blends in perfectly in any situation in the game. The sound effects are pretty decent as well. When listening to the soundtrack in the game it really helps you to become immersed in the world of Gaia.

The voice acting is spot on! They fit perfectly to each character in this game. In my opinion the voice actors really help you to feel connected to each character.

The good

– An incredible story that takes you with on an unforgettable adventure
– Incredible character design
– Great sound track
– Beautiful worlds to explore
– Clean user interface
– A fun and engaging combat system
– Replayability.
The bad
– Controllers do not always respond
– The game lags even on high performance machines
– Platforming can be frustrating at times.
