Next to the famous new Zelda game, another game released for the new Nintendo Switch. 1-2-Switch is a great game to pick up for your next party.
This game is played with 2 (or more) players. Generally the game is played with two players at a time and the main focus is on each other. You barely need to look at the screen. The only time you do have to look at the screen is when you choose a new mini game or when you have to read the instructions. The instructions to the game come in the form of a video.
There are currently many mini games out already and I believe that they add more mini games / matches to the game over download in due time. The games use the Joy-Con controller as the main tool. The Joy-Con controller has several interesting sensors with which it can figure out in which of the 360 degrees turn your controller is facing or held, whether you hold it vertical or horizontal and uses its new Rumble HD rumblepack as an interface to the player.
You can shoot each other in a Western styled duel, you can fight each other in a boxing ring, you can fight each other with samurai swords, in which you need to catch the sword slash with both hands. There are Zen poses for those that love that. There is a game where you can milk a cow. A game to shave your face – the one quickest and shaved off most wins. A game to shake a bottle of champagne without exploding it. A game where you have to guess how many balls are in your Joy Con controller (like balls in a wooden box).
Even a game where you use the Joy Con controller on a flat service, lift it up to turn a dial and then put it down. It all goes to such precision that it amazes me how good the technology behind this new console is. And with that it also amazes me how little games there are that are making use of this sofar. But that can only be promising to the future of games on this console – what a great possibility of technology they can put into the next adventure game.
I played against The Game Mistress and actually managed to win a few times with some of the games. Such as the shaving game and the wooden box with balls game. She came out better with some of the precision stuff, such as the Treasure Chest and the Rotation game. I haven’t mentioned all of the games and I am actually quite sure they might add more along the coming time (or so I hope).
The graphics are cartoonish with a lot of distinct screaming out colours to clearly show contour. The game uses a lot of video material for the explanation of the game. This actually teaches best how to play the game. Unfortunately not everything was clear straight away.
You use the Joy-Con controller. There are two of them on the console, each player holds one of them and uses it in different ways for the different mini games. The controls are really interesting. I did feel though that it sometimes could have been a little bit more clear to the player which control to use where. From time to time I wasn’t sure whether I had to use the Joy Con itself with its Rumble HD technology or whether I had to press a button on the Joy Con to win from my opponent. But after trying and failing I figured it out quick enough.
Sound & Music
The sound effects are very fitting. The Rumble HD technology also makes interesting sound – or should I say feeling – in your hands. You can feel every little detail with this new high quality rumble system. They use video’s with music or sound effects for most of the game instructions. Other than that there is also music and sound effects in the menu’s which just fits well together. It gives me the feeling of a party game.
Sofar people feel that this game is more like a tech demo than a game. I say 1, 2, Switch is a really fun game to play as a party game. When we got friends or family over we tend to put the consoles on and start some game of Mario Party and similar games and now we got an extra title to add to our mix of games for a serious party gaming evening in front of the TV. And the real cool thing of the Nintendo Switch is that you can take this console with its controllers along to a party where no TV is available and still have fun!
