Welcome to hell! This is not your everyday trip. You play as the crusader Dante who has been a very naughty boy in his life. For that he must travel through the levels of hell to save his beloved Beatrice from Lucifer himself. Do you dare to venture past the gates of hell? Or will you succumb with all the other condemned spirits.

[/intro]

Console: Xbox360
Genre: Action third person hack and slash
Developer: Visceral Games
Publisher: EA

This game is rated 18+ and it’s for a reason! So, unless you don’t mind what games your child plays, I would not advice this game for children! The story is grim there is a lot of violence and it offers sexual content. This game and this review is NOT advised for the younger audience.

Story
The story starts with the crusader Dante fighting a horde of mobs in the city of Acre. Suddenly an assassin backstabs him and he is confronted by death and that his sins were never forgiven. Dante refuses to accept his death and slays death taking his weapon. Afterwards Dante decides to return home. First he embedded a red cross in his chest, symbolizing each sin he has committed but once he returns home, he finds his father and his beloved killed. Her spirit appears but before she gets a chance to go to heaven Lucifer captures her and drags her back to hell.
After making your vows and empowering the cross that Beatrice gave you, the cracks of hell open up to you. And here starts the journey to hell. Why would Lucifer steal your beloved Beatrice? Is there more that meets the eye? The more you learn from Dante and his sins the more you dislike him!

Gameplay
You have to progress through the nine circles of hell. Each circle gives Dante flashbacks of the sins he has committed. You start of at Limbo. The game itself is filled with compelling enemies and bosses, combined with a taste of twisty platforming and puzzle solving.
Dante is equipped with two weapons, The unholy scythe that was taken from Death, a close combat weapon that will offer deadly attacks. Killing your foes with this weapon is a real joy! The second weapon is Beatrice’s Cross, a holy weapon that offers powerful range skills to slay enemies. Try jumping and attacking with it, you will be pleased with the outcome. By combining skills and slaying as many enemies as possible in a short period of time, you will execute combo moves and the combo multiplayer grows. As you slay enemies you will obtain souls. Souls are important as you will need them to upgrade your combo moves with the help of the skill tree.

The upgrade tree consists of holy and unholy, holy focusing on your cross while unholy focusing on combat with your scythe. Throughout the game you will obtain tortured souls. Dante has the ability to condemn or absolve them. You can even do the same with greater enemies. Each condemnation or absolution will result in the gaining of Holy or Unholy points. Depending how many souls you punish or absolve your ranking either in the holy or unholy tree will grow unlocking new abilities. Use the souls you gather to purchase the skills.

During the game, Dante will be able to use magic. These spells will come in handy to handle the punishing demons from hell.

Ever wanted to ride a giant beast? This game will let you! You can tame beasts in the game with your scythe; this will grant you new powerful abilities as long as you control the beast. There are relics you can pick up in the game to help your progress, they will give you helpful bonuses, upgrade your stats or provide you other useful stuff. Keep also an eye out for Judas coins and Beatrice stones, they are normally hidden in the level and are worth collecting. Gameplay wise this game will keep you busy!

Graphics
The graphics in this game are very well done. The monsters are extremely creatively detailed and the environments really do give you the feeling you are exploring hell. Every ring is totally different designed. The bosses in this game look very well designed, there has been put a lot of detail in them. This is true eye candy.
The story telling is presented in beautifully hand drawn animations. You like blood and gore? It’s your lucky day this game has it all!

Sound
Incredible sound effects. It really does make you feel you are in hell. All from the music to the grim screams of suffering souls. The bosses offer fantastic voice acting. The screams and moans from the circle of lust. Well what can I say? It sounds like lust. The sounds contribute nicely making you feel part of the game. Sadly Dante’s voice is a letdown, he sounds more like a coward than a hero.

Good points
– fantastic combat
– combination of skills and magic are well designed
– Incredible sound
– the bosses are awfully fun
– enough content to keep you going

Bad points
– Dante’s voice is horrible done
– the difficulty curve can suddenly change from moderate to outright punishing
– irritating glitches

Conclusion
Dante’s inferno is a fun game to explore. The combat is well done. Enough blood and gore to keep anyone entertained. Yes, the story isn’t for the light hearted. And this game isn’t recommended for children! The visuals and game play are amazing and the platforming is really fun. The voices can be a letdown, but that is forgiven as the game has so much to offer.
So, whenever you want to take a holiday trip to hell, this is the game for you!

Morale of the day
Do not be a smartarse like Dante and commit all these sins, or Lucifer will teach you a lesson.

Is this yet another Zombie game or a real innovative game recreated for the Zombie genre? Here’s a preview of what DayZ is about.

[/intro]
DayZ is a multiplayer sandbox mod for a little older game named ARMA 2 that was published in 2009.

ARMA 2 is a military simulation game in the shooting (fps) genre with a graphically realistic setting.

The day of the Zombies, DayZ, puts up a setting where viruses have caused the whole world to turn into zombies. DayZ is a multiplayer online sandbox game in which you will have to survive.
You as part of the group survivors have the job of keeping the zombies at bay aswell as keeping yourself alive.

What this game or mod makes it so different from common zombie shooters is that you will have to think more in emotions and primary needs. Surviving in DayZ isn’t just about putting a lot of bullets into the zombies that approach you.

Zombies is actually the least of your concern. Wounds to your body can cause you to get infections, lack of food and water combined with the emotional state of your character can cause you to spontaniously faint, bulletwounds can cause you to break your bones, getting yourself ambushed can cause you to enter a state of shock and both zombies and diseased players can get you infected. about the primary need of safety (emotion) and food (hunger, blood pressure), generally about reallife survival, if it is comparible to anything real life that is.
DayZ is aswell a team sport as it can be played together online but you will also have the fear of betrayal among these players. Ofcourse, this game is also about finding your needed supply of guns and ammo and the shooting of zombies. But zombies are just generally not your only concern of survival. You might get infected with the same unknown virus, which means you will have to find your portion of medicine, as well as get shot in the knees which can cause you infections that are dangerous and need treatment immediatly. Survival has gotten a totally different meaning.

Dean Hall, the designer of the DayZ mod, has gotten the idea from the days he spent in the New Zealand Army. The concept of this game is that of to train people how to think, react and respond upon exposure to emotional survival situations.

The strange thing of this concept of gameplay is that it is consisting of several rather frustrating elements that would normally make a game bad.

But apparantly, just like in Minecraft where survival of zombies, hunger, drowning, lava and falling damage play part, does this new way of thinking in survival strategies appeal to players.
That automatically means though that it isn’t a game for everyone. You will have to like to think in a strategical survival manner, like to shoot zombies from time to time and be able to sleep peacefully after you’ve been playing this game for several hours in a dark room in your house.

One thing for sure: the creators of the original ARMA 2 game that this mod is built upon, are more than happy with this popular alpha mod release in August this year. The sales went sky high and reached the top seller chart on Steam for over seven weeks, reaching 300.000 unit sales within two months of its release.

Because of its popularity, the creators of the DayZ mod have stated that a standalone version of the game will be launched somewhere in 2012.

Thanks to ‘Nicky Kim’ for the tip and help on the DayZ preview.

A new followup on the Halo series is coming soon for Xbox360. Halo 4 will come as a trilogy named ‘Reclaimer Trilogy’ Since Bungie will not be producing this game anymore, Microsoft had to look for a new company to produce it.

[/intro]

This type of move is very difficult for such a popular franchise as the Halo franchise. In fact, such a move has never been done before.

It is something very risky to do for such a big franchise as the Halo franchise, because it is always unsure whether the new studio will make the game just as good or better as the previous series.
Nonetheless 343 Industries seem to do a fantastic job on recreating the environment and gameplay of Halo 4. They even have managed to improve on the multiplayer side of the game.

Halo 4 has at least become a visual enhanched in comparison with the previous Halos. Lightning is stronly improved, shadows are more visible and clear. Overal graphic performance is more crisp and improved.
The visor of Chief has been upgraded aswell with clear icons and readable text.

But the biggest reason that people play Halo is still the storyline itself. They want to know what Master Chief will be up to in this new adventure. And this is what is the most exciting bit of 343 Industries. They made the story interesting and inviting. You can easily get involved in the new situations that Master Chief will be forcefully put in. The epic SCIFI storyline goes further from the point where it left of in Halo 3, but four years after it. It will continue with the protagonist Master Chief and the AI Cortana. Instead of following the previous action-driven storyline, Halo 4 will be more based upon mystery and exploration.

To not show any spoilers, we just give you the video that has been displayed on the E3 2012 of last June.

Halo 4 Trailer at E3 2012:

The AI has also been improved: Crawlers will group up and flank around and behind you and Watchers will protect Knights.
343 Industries got it also right on guns. A whole scala of guns have been added to the game or otherwise improved heavily upon. Sound effects are much better and sharper in comparison to the previous Halos making the ambience and feel spot on.

On multiplayer, players will be able to play cooperatively with up to three players on both storymode and campaign mode. Halo 4 will also come with its editor ‘Forge’.

The game is set for a worldwide release on the 6th of November 2012 on Xbox360.

Less than a week ago Torchlight 2 came out and we both had to play it straight away. We hoped to create an account on the website to be able to play online, but because of high demand their website went pretty much offline. But then we figured out it could also be played and shared over LAN. I’ve produced a video of this 40 minute play as a result.

[/intro]

This video is not the usual showdown of a game with explanation of everything you can find in it, but instead a 40 minute “Let’s Play” video of game footage of both The Game Mistress and me (Steven).

We are playing Veteran mode, which is a bit harder than the normal difficulty. We comment the video during play with game elements that we come across and all the other funny stuff that happens during playing. We are completing a quest line with a boss on the end and show you some in game mechanics.

See our video here:

We hope to make more Torchlight 2 footage videos over the coming weeks.

Happy watching!

Steven

Metroid was the first game I ever played. I was only about 2 years old and my mother was so kind to put the NES on for me. This was the first game that surprised many, because the hero in this game is a lady named Samus Aran. It was only revealed when you finished the game, many thought it was another male hero. This game is the first game about the bounty hunter Samus Aran and this is her first big adventure.

Console: Nintendo Entertainment System
Release date: 1986
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Action adventure

Story
Your mission is to stop the space pirates. They have been exposing Metroids to beta waves, to reproduce them. They want to use the Metroids as biological weapons to destroy all life forms that oppose them. The Metroids also have a powerful main intelligence named Mother Brain. Explore the planet of Zebes to destroy the evil space pirates’ plans and restore order in the galaxy.

Gameplay
Metroid lets you explore the planet Zebes. On your way you can unlock powerful abilities for Samus to make her survive the deadly planet. Your first upgrade will be the morph ball later on you will get more powerful suits, arm cannons missiles, boots and other goodies. You can as well upgrade your life and missiles. Keep your eyes open for upgrades. The areas themselves change. Some are inaccessible until you have gained a certain powerup. Watch out, because Kraid, Ridley and the Metroids will try to stop you! If that’s not bad enough, some areas are hazardous, giving you a good beating and can be inaccessible until you upgraded your suit.

As Metroid doesn’t have a map, such as is the case in later titles, it makes this game very challenging to figure out where to go next.

There are enough challenging fights, bosses and you can explore he planet to keep yourself busy. I myself love the exploration factore, combining skills and weapons might take you to new places or easier ways to get past enemies.

Metroid is the first game to introduce save progress with password. If you die or choose to quit the game the game offers you a long password to write down, 24 letter code. This password can be used next time you want to play to load your progress, you can use this feature for cheats as well. Try to write in the password screen JUSTIN BAILEY or NARPAS SWORD and see what happens.

Graphics
For an 8bit console, Metroid in that time had amazing graphics. The areas were well detailed; you could see the differences in monsters, areas, weapons, and surroundings. This game won’t disappoint in the visuals.

Sound
This game features full music for every stage you enter, the sound itself is very well made. It’s always a joy to hear the Metroid theme when you enter Zebes, or when you do a power upgrade. It always leaves a smile on my face. The music does a good job telling you about the area you are in. Turian, the last place in the game, the music is especially evil. It’s impossible to get bored from the sound and music in this game.

Conclusion
Metroid is a jewel of its own. It’s a wonderful game that offers a great challenge, loads of things and places to explore, much to upgrade and wonderful music to keep you busy. The password system is a welcoming feature, as in old days it was almost impossible to save your progress. The ending itself is very rewarding, as stated above, the hero in this game is a female. Thanks to this game, Samus Aran is one of my favourite video game icons. Can you find all five different endings? The quicker you finish the game, the better the ending will turn out.

Boss battles are challenging but a real pleasure when completed. For an old title, this game has a lot to offer and lots of gameplay value. This is one of the few games that truly bring back nostalgia. Because of population you can purchase a remake for the Gameboy Advance, with upgraded visuals, music, exploration, extra gameplay and a map system to help you along. Metroid won’t ever be forgotten, I recommend to plug in your old NES just to play this game for a blast or download it on the virtual console channel for the Wii.

Game on!
